Choose Hypoallergenic Lotion for Sensitive Skin

If your skin is sensitive, it is important to use hypoallergenic lotion to avoid any adverse effects. Products that are not hypoallergenic may cause contact dermatitis (skin rash) with itching, flaking or other side effects. Luckily there are lots of sensitive skin lotions on the market today. You can find them in supermarkets and drugstores from brands like Johnson & Johnson, Aveeno and Vaseline. Then there are online companies who sell lotion for sensitive skin, which is often made by hand and shipped fresh to your door. So what makes sensitive skin lotion different from other lotions on the market?

As previously mentioned, moisturizing products for sensitive skin are hypoallergenic, which means they should not cause any kind of allergic skin reaction. Many parents choose hypoallergenic products for their babies. Also, these lotions sometimes contain nourishing vitamins and herbs that play a beneficial role in the look and feel of the skin. A sampling of these herbs include but are not limited to feverfew, chamomile and calendula. For example Aveeno uses feverfew for redness reduction in some of their sensitive skin products.

You should be aware that a hypoallergenic product is not guaranteed not to cause allergic effects, but it is highly unlikely to do so. When shopping for moisturizers and other skin care products, those with sensitive skin should steer clear of products with dyes or fragrances. Unscented lotion like Lubriderm original formula is ideal because it is hypoallergenic and fragrance free. There are other lotions on the market that are fragrance free also. For example, Cetaphil is a gentle but effective cleanser that is made for sensitive skin that has no scent or color.

The bottom line is that there are many hypoallergenic lotion brands and related products from which you can choose. In addition to moisturizing with a product made for sensitive skin, you should have a body wash, soap or other type of cleanser made for your skin type also. Usually products made for the body are too harsh to use on the face. Facial products are formulated for the more delicate skin of the face. For the body a good cleanser and lotion should be enough, for the face you may want a hypoallergenic cleanser, treatment for any skin issues you have such as blemishes or signs of aging, moisturizer and sunscreen.
